The internet has become a part of our everyday life, especially as everything can be seen or done online, as long as you have internet access. Tom Wheeler, chairman of the F.C.C. (Federal Communications Commission), has come up with plans to ensure net-neutrality, or best known as Open-internet. In this article, F.C.C. commission is joining forces with social media companies to regulate consumer Internet service as a public utility.. Wong used Ethos very effectively as he quoted what Obama said about this issue, and by mentioning much known social media companies. An analysis of the paper will be done to examine the benefits and constraints on the writing of this genre.
“F.C.C. Plans Strong Hand to Regulate the Internet” is an informative blog written from the perspective of democrats and internet companies who want regulations on the internet or want a net-neutrality, as known by others. The article provides the information in a simple but convincing way on why the internet should be limited for some people. Then proceeds to inform his targeted audience on what the issues are, as Tom Wheeler, The F.C.C. chairman, addressed them. The mood throughout the article is neutral, which doesn’t really change from beginning to end.
Wong’s main purpose in his article was to get people to agree with Wheeler on his ideas of net-neutrality. In the article, he states “He also included provisions to protect consumer privacy and to ensure Internet service is available for people with disabilities and in remote areas.” (Wong, 2015, para. 3) showing what type of people these new rules will be targeting. Targeting this specific types of people, will be enough for the laws to go through congress. Wong believes the internet should be regulated, as he gave examples and agreed with social media companies about the hackers attack this past December. Wong believes that after everyone gets his message though his different strategies, the big issue will now be solved. The way he uses such strategies strengthens throughout the blog.
He uses third-person perspective to get his point straight. As an informative blog, Wong starts most of the paragraphs by mentioning some important character/information who adds to the problem addressed in the blog. It is not very easy to target the absolute audience, but after reading it several times, one can get the idea of who he is trying to reach out for most specifically. This can be observed as he uses Ethos more than any other rhetorical appeal. Pathos cannot be observed in such blog because of the way the information is provided, yet it would have been really useful. Especially in this type of blog, where you try to get people to agree with you and respond the same way you do.
The way Wong expressed himself in the blog was really effective as well. Using examples as the Title II of the Communications Act, “Some industry analysts expected Mr. Wheeler to leave some rules out of this order, partly…to reclassify high-speed Internet service as a telecommunications service, instead of an information service.” (Wong, 2015, para 13) And such as “In Congress, Republicans are circulating draft legislation that embraces the essence of net neutrality by…but their proposal would prevent the F.C.C. from issuing regulations to achieve those goals.” (Wong, 2015, para 15) The logistic of the blog increased greatly, this examples make the problem big, as is breaking Title II of the Communications Act and is being supported by Republicans. Most of the blog is based in Ethos and Logos, which combined, make this informative blog effective on showing its point.
